REM Behavior Disorder (RBD) Study

People with REM Behavior Disorder (RBD) act out dramatic and sometimes violent dreams during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. RBD seems similar to sleepwalking and periodic limb movement disorder except that RBD movements occur during REM sleep, when the body is usually in a state of sleep paralysis. There is no known cause for RBD. It is usually treated with Clonazepam, which may cause sedation.

People with RBD risk injury to themselves and their sleep partners. Partners of people with RBD often end up sleeping in different rooms if the level of symptoms is too disturbing.

If you have been diagnosed with RBD or you think you may have it, you may qualify to participate in a research study currently being conducted at the Sleep Medicine Centers of WNY. This study is being conducted to investigate whether use of the drug Ramelteon (Rozerem) is effective for the signs and symptoms of RBD.
